Must try Nightfall some day, just to be sure, but for the time being I think my flirtation with the concept is done. I guess deckbuilders aren’t really my thing: there’s not been one pure deck building game I’ve really enjoyed. I’ve played the game and lot and enjoyed it, got my money’s worth, but frankly I’m starting to get a little bored of it, even with the added pleasure of losing repeatedly to you lot. There is enough decision space in the game to warrant tactical and strategic thinking. So, as the Ascension players amongst you will already know, I have the app on my iPad. These are just a gist of thoughts and decisions one has to take while playing the game. You can even control how fast the card market shifts by not buying anything at all and baiting your opponent into buying bad stuff. Key part here is even though the card market is random, it changes gradually from turn to turn allowing you to slowly catch up to it.Įvery buy decision needs to be made seeing a few turns in advance, especially seeing how likely the card market is going to shift in the coming turn. A key part of deck-building in Ascension is building a deck that's most in tune with the card market to scrape off the most points. Just because the card market is random doesn't imply that the game is an RNG fest. I've got ~1700 plays over the app and can surely say that a skilled player will beat weaker one 95% of the time. I will sincerely disagree on Ascension being 'buy the best card' and 'RNG-fest'. But if you like the strategic depth of Dominion, I think you'll be pretty disappointed with Ascension Ascension is about as good as a random, swingy, RNG-fest deck builder can be given the completely random market. by allowing you to see what cards are available in upcoming turns). While the market is not technically fixed, the pyramid structure mitigates the problem of a random market (e.g. Valley of the Kings has an insane amount of decision space for such a small box game, and after Dominion is the best deck builder IMO. This is why I can't stand random market deck builders. The games are quicker and swingier, but there is none of the strategic depth of Dominion. Games with random markets have a far higher RNG factor, and there is virtually no strategy to speak of - the only strategy is "buy the best available card and hope better cards are available on your turn vs other players' turns". Most people who love deck builders like Star Realms/Ascension seem to not like Dominion, and it comes down to the random vs fixed market set ups. I'm gonna try to keep this brief cuz frankly I bore myself with how often I bang this drum - but I would seriously consider looking into Valley of the Kings instead, especially if you like Dominion. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
